At The Sentry, two players struck the incorrect ball, resulting in them each receiving expensive 2-shot penalties.
Late on Sunday at The Sentry, Will Zalatoris and his playing partner Cam Davis were both doing well when something truly unusual occurred, one of the strangest incidents you might witness at a PGA Tour event.
While playing the par-5 15th hole at Kapalua, Zalatoris struck his second shot just short and to the right of the green. Davis followed suit and made the same shot. It was only when they reached the green, where they were paired with Tom Hoge, that they discovered they had both played the wrong ball, as explained by rules expert Mark Dusbabek during the Golf Channel broadcast.
According to Rule 6.3c, each player who strikes the incorrect ball faces a two-shot penalty, and they must rectify the error by returning to play the correct ball to complete the hole. Both Zalatoris and Davis followed this procedure. As a result, they both ended up with bogeys instead of the birdies they would have made.
At that moment, Davis was ranked within the top 10. He proceeded to bogey the 17th hole but birdied the 18th, finishing with a score of 69 and tying for 13th place at 22 under. If he had scored two strokes better, he would have moved into the top five, earning an additional $300,000 on top of his $410,000 prize. Zalatoris shot a 73, tying for 26th place, while two strokes better would have placed him in a tie for 15th at a total of 21 under par.

Bet on PGA Tour: Matchups for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship marks the second-to-last tournament in the FedExCup Fall series, taking the PGA Tour to another beautiful tropical venue for its sixth edition. A full roster of 120 golfers will tackle the challenging Port Royal Golf Club, although several top players are absent. Many participants are aiming to secure their spots in prestigious tournaments for 2025, while others are focused on gathering as many FedExCup points as possible.
Last year's unexpected champion, Camilo Villegas, who ended a nine-year title drought with a two-stroke victory at odds of approximately 126/1, serves as a reminder that surprises can happen. Current odds indicate a competitive field, with Doug Ghim, Seamus Power, and Maverick McNealy among the frontrunners. With many of the Tour's top players opting not to participate, analyzing the field presents more of a challenge. However, the Port Royal Golf Club itself is not particularly difficult. As the sole venue for this tournament's six-year history, it stretches 6,828 yards with a par of 71, and while it’s not very challenging, the varied terrain can give the impression of added length. Last year, Villegas proved that the course poses little threat, as he tied the tournament scoring record with an impressive 24-under 260.

PGA Tour Betting: Matchups for the ZOZO Championship
This week, several prominent figures in golf are making their return as the PGA Tour travels to Japan for the sixth installment of the ZOZO Championship. Collin Morikawa, defending his title, will make his first appearance in a stroke-play event since the TOUR Championship and is currently the second favorite in the outright odds, just behind two-time major champion and world No. 2, Xander Schauffele.
The tournament has already seen some thrilling moments in its short history, with Tiger Woods claiming his last of 82 Tour titles at the inaugural event in 2019. In 2021, Japan’s top golfer, Hideki Matsuyama, secured an easy victory when the tournament returned to his home country after being relocated due to COVID-19. The field is capped at 78 golfers, including many of Japan’s best, as the event is co-sanctioned by the Japan Golf Tour Organization. The layout of the ZOZO Championship consists of nine holes from each of the two courses at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club. This traditional Japanese-style course was lengthened a few years ago but remains relatively short by Tour standards, measuring 7,079 yards with a par of 70. Its straightforward design is made more challenging by tree-lined fairways and multiple doglegs. The field will be limited to 78 golfers, with several exemptions available for JGTO members. Since the field is restricted, there will be no cut, ensuring that every player competes in four rounds. Notably, some holes on the course feature two greens, which may confuse viewers unfamiliar with this layout. Players are allowed a free drop if they mistakenly choose the wrong landing area. Tiger Woods set the tournament scoring record at 19-under 261 during its inaugural event in 2019.

Rory McIlroy emerges as the victor of the PGA Tour's Player Impact Program.
Rory McIlroy has secured the title of the PGA Tour's 2023 Player Impact Program champion, earning a substantial prize of $15 million. The official announcement was made to players through a memo by PGA Tour executive vice president and chief player officer Jason Gore, with a copy of the memo being shared on social media by tour member Nate Lashley.
At the age of 34, Rory McIlroy achieved two victories on the global stage in 2023 and played a pivotal role in the European team's triumph at the Ryder Cup, contributing an impressive four points. Despite his success, McIlroy found himself in the spotlight as the face of the PGA Tour's battle against LIV Golf. This position left him feeling like a "sacrificial lamb" following the unexpected framework agreement between the tour and LIV's sponsor, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, in June. The news about the Player Impact Program (PIP) comes shortly after McIlroy's decision to step down from the PGA Tour's policy board and a delay in the launch of TGL, the tech-infused golf league he co-founded with Tiger Woods, by a year.
The Player Impact Program (PIP) was introduced in 2021 as a bonus pool aimed at recognizing players who generated increased engagement and publicity for the PGA Tour. Initially implemented as a response to rumors of lucrative offers from the then-Premier Golf League, the inaugural program had some unintended consequences. Five out of the ten winners in 2021, including Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Bubba Watson, eventually left the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf. However, enhancements to the PIP were announced at last year's Tour Championship to expand its reach. The payout for the 2022 and 2023 PIP pools was increased to $100 million, with 20 players being rewarded, a significant increase from the $40 million distributed in the previous year.
The process of compiling the list involves the PGA Tour utilizing various metrics, including internet searches, the number of news articles featuring a player's name, the duration of a player's sponsor logos appearing on screen during PGA Tour telecasts on Saturdays and Sundays, a player's overall awareness score among the wider US population, and a social media score that takes into account a player's reach, conversation, and engagement metrics. In addition to Google Search, Meltwater, and Nielsen measurements, the 2023 list incorporated new criteria such as general population awareness and fan awareness.
